It highlights five key areas: Social Support, Sense of Purpose, Skill Development, Physical Activity, and Access to Resources. Each area includes a brief description and an accompanying photo. The Importance of Community Engagement

Community engagement fosters a sense of belonging and connection, which are crucial for positive mental health. By participating in community activities, individuals can build supportive networks, reduce feelings of isolation, and improve their overall wellbeing.

Age UK Barnsley; an organisation who received funding support from the Northern Powergrid Foundation says, ‘’Our project aims to ensure that residents of Barnsley have access to a safe and warm space in the event of a blackout. By creating a designated community hub, we can provide shelter, warmth, and support, ensuring that no one is left vulnerable during emergencies. This initiative is essential for promoting the well-being and safety of all residents’’

Ways community engagement can make a difference

Social Support: Engaging with community groups provides opportunities to form meaningful relationships and receive support from others. These connections can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, offering a network of people who understand and share similar experiences. This support system can be crucial during challenging times, providing comfort and encouragement.

Sense of Purpose: Volunteering and participating in community projects can give individuals purpose and fulfilment, boosting their mental health. Contributing to something larger than yourself can implement a sense of accomplishment and pride. Knowing your efforts are making a positive impact on others can be incredibly rewarding.

Physical Activity: Many community activities involve physical exercise, which is known to improve mood and reduce stress. Whether it's participating in a community sports league, joining a walking group, or helping with a community garden, physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Regular exercise also promotes better sleep and overall physical health, which are closely linked to positive mental wellbeing.

Skill Development: Learning new skills and contributing to community projects can enhance self-esteem and confidence. Engaging in activities that challenge you to grow and develop new abilities can be empowering. Whether it's learning to cook at a community centre, mastering a new craft, or developing leadership skills through organising events, these experiences can boost your sense of self-worth.

Access to Resources: Community engagement often provides access to valuable resources and information that can support mental health. Community centres can offer educational workshops, mental health services, and other resources that might not be easily accessible otherwise. Being part of a community can also help individuals stay informed about events, services, and opportunities that can enhance their quality of life.

The Northern Powergrid Foundation is dedicated to supporting projects that promote community resilience and wellbeing. Through our grant funding, we aim to empower communities to create safe, supportive environments where everyone can thrive. Examples of our funded projects include establishing community hubs equipped with solar panels and battery storage to ensure vital services continue during power cuts or emergencies.

Medomsley Community Action Group says ‘’ We have established a 'Warm community location' to provide a space for the community in the event of widespread power, cuts or disasters at Medomsley Methodist Church Hall. This provides the community a location for socialising, mental stimulation, and mutual support. ‘’

Whittingham Memorial Institute says ‘’ The community will benefit from reduced running costs for our village hall, allowing us to run a wide variety of activities that benefit the community's physical and mental health’ ‘

Get Involved

We encourage everyone to get involved in their local community and take advantage of the benefits of community engagement. Whether it's volunteering, joining a group, or participating in community events, every effort counts towards building a healthier, more connected community.
